What Are The Symptoms Of Genital Herpes?from:
If you have genital
herpes, you're not alone and you shouldn't feel ashamed.
Genital herpes is
widespread in the United States. It is estimated that at least
45 million people are infected with the herpes virus. That means
that 1 out of 5 people (teenage and over) are infected with the
virus. Anyone who is sexually active, even with just one person,
can get genital herpes. There are up to 1 million new cases each
year, and, in fact, genital herpes is now more common than
diseases like diabetes and asthma. Signs and Symptoms
Most people infected with href="http://Herpes.eabout.info">HSV-2 are not aware of
their infection. However, if signs and symptoms occur during the
first outbreak, they can be quite pronounced. The first outbreak
usually occurs within two weeks after the virus is transmitted,
and the sores typically heal within two to four weeks. Other
signs and symptoms during the primary episode may include a
second crop of sores, and flu-like symptoms, including fever and
swollen glands. However, most individuals with HSV-2 infection
may never have sores, or they may have very mild signs that they
do not even notice or that they mistake for insect bites or
another skin condition.
These symptoms might include tingling or href="http://Herpes.eabout.info">sores near the area where
the virus has entered the body, such as on the genital or rectal
area, on buttocks or thighs, or occasionally on other parts of
the body where the virus has entered through broken skin. They
also can occur inside the vagina and on the cervix in women, or
in the urinary passage of women and men. Small red bumps appear
first, develop into small blisters, and then become itchy,
painful sores that might develop a crust and will heal without
leaving a scar. Sometimes, there is a crack or raw area or some
redness without pain, itching, or tingling.
Within a few days, sores (also called lesions) show up where the
virus has entered the body, such as on the mouth, penis, or
vagina. Sores can also show up on a woman's cervix, which is the
opening to the uterus or womb, or in the urinary passage in men.
The sores are small red bumps that may turn into blisters or
painful open sores. Over a period of days, the sores become
crusted and then heal without scarring.
Other symptoms that may accompany the first (and less often
future) outbreak of genital
herpes are fever, headache, muscle aches, painful or
vaginal discharge, and swollen glands in the groin area.
Most people diagnosed with a first episode of genital herpes can
expect to have several (typically four or five) outbreaks
(symptomatic recurrences) within a year. Over time these
recurrences usually decrease in frequency.
Often, though, people don't recognize their first or subsequent
outbreaks. People who have mild or no symptoms at all may not
think they are infected with herpes. They can still transmit the
virus to others, however.
The symptoms of genital herpes vary from person to person. Some
people have severe symptoms, such as many painful sores, while
others have mild symptoms.
